Nella campagna vicino Viterbo, è situata la necropoli di Castel D’Asso, come descritto da Cicerone e chiamata la città di Axia, un luogo non molto visitato ma di una bellezza incredibile. Il sito è facilmente raggiungibile: dalla superstrada che collega Orte a Tarquinia prendere l’uscita delle Terme dei Papi e seguire le indicazioni per la necropoli.
Lo stile di questi monumenti, la loro semplicità e grandezza ci ricorda molto quelli egiziani con i quali gli etruschi avevano stretti rapporti commerciali.
In the countryside near Viterbo it is possible to visit (even if it is a quite abandoned site) the Etruscan Necropolis of the ancient Axia as mentioned by Cicero. The place is very easy to be reached, obviously by car exiting from the “superstrada” from Orte to Tarquinia to the “Terme dei Papi” and then following the old signals.
The general style of these monuments, their simplicity, massive grandeur, and strong Egyptian features testify to their strong commercial relationships. Also it is visible in the remarkable plainness of the sarcophagi, and by the archaic character of the rest of their furniture.
Onthe opposite Cliff of the necropolis there was the ancient town, on the intersection of the rio Freddano and the Arcione.
Here, accordingly, beside the numerous remains of the middle ages, to which the castle wholly belongs, may be traced the outline of a town, almost utterly destroyed, indeed, but, on one side, towards the east, retaining a fragment of its walls in several courses of rectangular tufo blocks, uncemented, which have every appearance of an Etruscan origin. The site is worthy of a visit for the fine view it commands of the tomb-hewn cliffs opposite. The extent of the town, which is clearly marked by the nature of the ground, was very small, about half a mile in circuit.
What may have been its ancient name is not easy to determine. By some it has been conjectured to be the Fanum Voltumnae, the shrine of the great goddess of the Etruscans, where the princes of Etruria used to meet in a grand national council. However the Etruscan appellation it is still not known.
Le tombe sono posizionate sulla parete tufacea situata di fronte al rio Arcione e sono scolpite nella roccia abbastanza simili a quelle che si possono osservare nella necropoli di S.Giuliano di Barbarano Romano ma, la caratteristica principale è nella loro dimensione. Entrando dentro una di queste come si vede dal breve video che ho inserito qui sotto, la cosa che colpisce di più è la quantità di sepolture contenute all’interno. Vale la pena organizzare una passeggiata nella campagna specialmente in autunno o in primavera, mentre eviterei i periodi di grande caldo proprio per la posizione molto assolata del luogo.
Buona passeggiata, ricordate di portare con voi acqua perché non vi sono attorno fonti dalle quali poter prenderne!
